I’m a prize-winning short story writer. My short fiction has appeared in publications including The Express, Take a Break, My Weekly and The People's Friend. I am the author of weekly soap opera, Riverside, for The People's Friend magazine - the longest running women's magazine in the world.

A life-long fan of the soap opera Coronation Street, I run two Coronation Street fan websites. The Coronation Street Blog is praised by the Manchester Evening News as 'Excellent' and 'Essential Reading for Street Fans'.

Lovely book
I really enjoyed this lovely book. I read it in a couple of days. Living in Chester-le-Street it really resonated with me and I loved picturing the scenes in my mind. It was lovely to discover the girls and be pulled into their lives. I found the story really absorbing. I very much look forward to reading more from this author. Highly recommend.

    a brilliant book, it is like i was reading a Catherine Cookson book, this had everything, a brilliant story line, fantastic characters.

    this is fiction, but the ideas came from the Birt ley Belgians (The Birtley Belgians emigrated from Belgium to Birtley in what is now Gateshead, Tyne & Wear but was then County Durham (Britain) during World War I to create an armaments factory)

    The Real Toffee Factory was set in five Acres Of Sweetness – The Horner Factory – The Horner factory was situated between the Front Street and the rail line (roughly where Morrison’s car park is now) It was originally the Murray Engine Works, when this closed in 1878 it was taken over by John William Luccock. In the early 1900s Jonathan Samuel took over the factory. In 1909 George Horner was the Managing Director of J Samuel & Co. Ltd, and in October 1910 the Board of Trade agreed that the trading name of J Samuel & Co. Ltd became George W Horner & Co. Ltd.

    This is a very readable story, set during the First World War, which gives an interesting insight into the lives of three girls both at work and at home. The characters are well defined and I hope the more unpleasant ones don't figure too much in the next book, which I am looking forward to reading.
